The closer to the light source you are, the higher the level of light.
However, the lamps produce heat and this radiant heat can become quite high.
These high temperatures are not beneficial to your plants, hence the following directives:

250W systems :      40 cm above the plant tops
400W systems :      60 cm above the plant tops
600W systems :      80 cm above the plant tops
1000W systems : 100 cm above the plant tops
